Genetic lineage is from East San Francisco Bay Area ("Bay Hills"), and the species is native to many places across the world. This perennial, hardy, part-sun loving / part-shade tolerant, and  rhizomatous plant is famed for its edible and herbal/medicinal uses yet is also a powerful soil builder and erosion abater, and it also shelters many types of beneficial insects . Careful: it does sting but it is a go-to plant selection.
